I Can Feel It...

It's been 5 months now...

After the Goofy Challenge I played nice and went to the Doctor to finally solve the knee problem that has been nagging me for almost 2 years now. He told me to get an MRI. Another one. Why do they have to be so expensive?! I kept putting it off "until I could afford it".

I have not run since.

Meanwhile, I have felt the deterioration of everything I have worked for in the last 4 years. Endurance, cardio and lung capacity... Weight has started to creep back up. Clothes feel tighter... and all the while my knee feels just as screwed up as it did in January.

So this is definitely not one of those "rest and let it heal" injuries. If I remain standing up too long, it hurts. If I run in anything but "The Beasties" it hurts. If I run in "The Beasties" it hurts somewhat less but it still bothers me. Last week I finally tried running again. I barely made it a mile before I called it quits.

This blog has never been about quitting. I always look at the positive angle, even in moments like this. If I sound a bit depressed, it's because I can't run like I want to run. I want to run. 5 years ago I would have laughed in your face if you told me I was depressed because I was sitting on a couch not doing anything. Yes. I'm complaining about not being able to run. How times change... and while I can't say that I'm in a good place right now, the fact that my "issues" have to do me wanting to lead a more active lifestyle then I can't help but think that's a good thing.

If I were happy or content with my current situation, that would be sad. That would be very sad.

So I'm gonna continue to try running. I'm also gonna try some cycling and cross-training to see how that feels. While some might think it unwise to run injured, I think it's important that I do run, even if it is at a lesser capacity than before. If I'm to get that MRI (and I am gonna do it, I promise) then it might as well show the full extent of what's wrong and that's not gonna happen sitting around the house.

I'm also gonna be reviewing a product I've had my eye on for a while and now seems to be the perfect time to try it and report it to you guys.

So while The Fat Runner has been down for some time, he is most definitely not out and if he is gonna be down, then he is gonna go down fighting.

  1. Glad to hear this issue isn't taking you "out". You are smart to be getting the MRI. I'm anxious to see what the issue might be and if it's something that needs more than just rest.
That's the thing with running. We do it to be healthier and in shape but it's like we always have something that's hurt. I've been injured more as a runner than I ever was as a non runner! Crossing fingers that your injury is nothing too serious.

  2. Preaching to the choir mi amigo. But if it's any consolation, after two knee scopes, alot of rehab, and knee compression sleeves, I FINALLY made it back. AND YOU WILL TOO. You may have to take some drastic steps (surgery?) but in the end it will all be worth it. The Mutt swears on it! :)

    1. I'm preparing myself for that possibility Kim. But if the Mutt swears on it then it is settled. All will be well. He has never let us down before

  3. Fingers crossed that the MRI can help point to some treatment that will help! And I'm glad to hear you're not out but still fighting :)

  6. Pardon the pun . . . but I've been in your shoes brother (literally). I'm a 50 something fat guy who loves running and a couple years ago the knee just bothered me too much - even wearing the Beasts. Found out I had a torn meniscus, but Ortho doctor assured me it probably wasn't from running - it's usually from twisting a certain way (probably yard work). Had the surgery and 8 weeks later back to running. A year later the same knee is bothering me and found it re-tore slightly (more yard work). A cortisone shot by the doc = 2 years and counting of pain-free. Running never bothered the knees and actually they felt worse if I stop for a period of time. Lesson? Run more and do less yard work.

  9. running is a great way to gain and maintain the ideal weight. With all these running events going on this year, from whom I already added some to my list, it seems like half and full marathons are the hype. I'm trying to become a serious runner with SportMe runner app which calculates distance, pace, time and calories and adjusts running plans to my progress. What other tips do you have in order to get more motivated?

  10. I'm also training for a half marathon with SportMe runner app, which calculates distance, time, pace and calories.

  11. I am an avid recreational runner and had a partial tear in my ACL 6 months ago, this past month I have slowly got back in to running. I always scoffed at any other form of cardio, I thought running was the only "pure" cardio.

While my knee was hurting I was at the gym and found out that using a rowing machine didn't hurt my knee at all. Rowing was a great way to preserve my cardiovascular fitness while also training muscles in my back I had never used before.

If running hurts too much, try biking, eliptical, rowing, etc.. to find some other cardio you can do while you get your knee sorted out. I am back to running now, but still hop on the rowing machine occasionally to keep my back strong.

  12. Fortunately, as you know, you will be in shape very soon. I'm sorry about your knee, it is a very common issue for all sportmen. A very good friend of mine had to give up soccer because of this, but nowadays he can run carefully and he is such a good runner! Congratulations for your blog!
